SAND FROM SHIPS
“Stock Diseases Carried” (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 18. The sand ballast being brought to New Zealand by overseas shipping and dumped could contain dangerous stock diseases. Auckland Federated Farmers was told today. "A little while ago some Dutch immigrants had their gumboots confiscated because they had mud on them,” said Mr A. R. Hughes. "Surely the same thing applies here. “I understand the sand which is being dumped close to fanning land—is now being used for reclamation work.” The organisation is asking the Department of Agriculture to trace its source of origin and ascertain that it is free from disease.
