Golf COMMONWEALTH COMPETITION
Miss S. Grigg Has Best Score The Canterbury and former national women's golf champion. Miss S. Grigg, has become the first New Zealander to return the leading scratch score in the Vesta Golfing Society's annual Founder's Trophy competition. Her two-under-par round of 70 at Heretaunga last year bettered the scratch scores of other women golfers from all parts of the Commonwealth in 1061. The Vesta Golfing Society has its headquarters in Hampshire, and all women golfers in Commonwealth countries are eligible for membership. The society’s aim is to promote friendship among its members, to the extent of playing on each other's courses if on overseas visits
Each year the society conducts its Founder's Trophy competition on the medal card postal system. In 1960 Miss N McMillan, of Culverden, became the first New Zealander to win the trophy with a record score of 13 under on her home course This score was equalled by the 1961 trophy winner, Mrs Z. Leviton, of Transvaal, and by the runner-up, Mrs V Joubert, of Natal Mrs Leviton won the award on a count-back.
With South Africa’s withdrawal from the Commonwealth, society members in the union will in future be ineligible to compete for the Founder’s Trophy. But they will remain full members of the society and will compete for a new trophy, the South Africa National Salver.
Besides Miss Grigg’s first placing in the scratch score section of the 1961 competition, Mrs N. Leigh, of the Akarana club. Auckland, was seventh equal in the trophy contest with a score of eight under.

The results of the 1961 contest were: Silver division: Miss B Murray, at Culverden (standard scratch score 68), 75. 13—62, six under; Miss S Grigg, at Heretaunga (72), 70. 3—67. five under; Mrs M.
