‘GAMES OATH ABUSED’
Paid Athletes Suggested ( N.Z. Press Association) SIMCOE (Ontario), April 17. “There isn’t a country in the world that lives up to the Olympic oath,” 'he president of the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (Mr J. N. Roxburgh) said yesterday. Mr Roxburgh said the present Olympic Oath, which demanded strictly amateur status, should be broadened possibly to allow athletes some remuneration so long as their particular sport was not also the main source of their income. “I don’t see how we could send a team to represent Canada at the 1964 Olympics with the present Oath.” he said. Mr Roxburgh, commenting on a resolution that the Canadian Army be asked to take over training and sponsorship of the Olympic hockey team, said the association could only act on the suggestion by disregarding the present Olympic Oath Canadian Press reported. "I realise lots of other countries do this.” he said. “In fact there is no nation that can send a team to the games and truly live up to the oath.”
