BLACK ROCK CLEARED

Wanganui River Obstacle (NZ. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 17. The legendary Black Roek. one of the Wanganui river’s worst hazards for canoeists, has been cleared from the river. This obstacle, a few miles from Taumarunui, was one of several blasted out last week by a unit of the Wanganui River Scenic Board as part of a plan to make the river more negotiable. Eliminating Black Rock took two cases of gelignite and two days’ work by the board’s ranger, Mr J. Erceg. and a Ministry of Works engineer, Mr L. Jones. Clearing of Black Rock was part of a 17-day programme of clearing obstacles between Taumarunui and Pipiriki. There were a few small obstacles to be cleared between Pipiriki and Wanganui, but the team had to discontinue work because of a rise and discoloration of the river. This work will probably be done next summer.
