News Agency Dispute Ends

Journalists of three British news agencies the Press Association, Reuter and Exchange Telegraph today overwhelmingly voted acceptance of the settlement of their wage dispute, reached last Friday between Uie National Union of Journalists and the managements. Strike notices were formally withdrawn. The settlement includes a general increase of £2 a week from January 1 last and a further general increase of 10s weekly from July 4. Improvements in working conditions and holidays were also agreed. The increases establish a new minimum wage of £24. will have two dredges working where it once had 14. Both are located north-west of Fairbanks at Hogatza Creek and Chicken. They will continue working indefinitely. The reason: there is no need for the expensive thawing and stripping of the overburden or topsoil. This preliminary operation is necessary at both Nome and Fairbanks. Its cost eliminated the last slim margin of profit. In Alaska, most of the dredging has been done along the creeks that were first panned for gold by prospectors in the Gold Rush days.
