Squash Rackets COMPETITION MATCHES

Close Opening Games Tlte Christchurch A grade squash rackets competition, which began last night, could hardly have started more auspiciously. The result of each of the three matches was. in doubt until the last point, had been played, with Christchurch A beating Collegiate and Christchurch B beating University B. in each case by only one game. The other match, between University A and Officers' Club, was drawn: each team won six games, but M. R. Blank was indosposed and Officers' Club had to forfeit his match with M. Simons. After the first round. Christchurch A and Christchurch B take the lead in the competition, with two points each, and University A and Officers' Club have one each.

The top-ranked Canterbury player. G. A. Davidson, again displayed his class when he beat D. J. Triggs in straight games in No. 1 position for University A, but in the lower bracket positions C. C. Kissling and D. D. M. Stewart were both unabie to secure the one game needed to give the team a win. In the last game, everything depended on Kissling. who improved gradually against G. C. P. Beadel and made a. bold attempt to secure the game needed for victory, losing it only 9-10. after having failed to clinch several chances. There were no easy wins in the matches between Christchurch B and University B. four going to four games and the fifth to 10-9 in the fifth, after R. A. Lathem had staged a fine last game recovery’ against W. Thom Collegiate did extremely well to hold Christchurch A to a loss by only a game, and when R. M. Garrett led P. R. Hadley in the last match by two games to love, was well positioned for victory’- But Hadley, with his team needing two games for a win and one for a draw, fought back to take the next two before losing the fifth and the match. In the one major surprise of the night B. J. Shirlaw easily beat M. O. Holdsworth. losing only six points against a player renowned for his ability to fight back. Results’ were:—

University A v, Officers’ Club. —G. A. Davidson beat D. J. Triggs, 9-2. 9-6. 9-2; M. J. Simons beat M. A. Blank by default; C. C. Kissling lost to G. C. P. Beadel. 2-9. 7-9. 9-10; D. D. M. Stewart lost to J. F. Cotter, 6-9, 7-9, 2-9. Match drawn, two matches and six games each. University B v. Christchurch B—P. M. Hill beat L. Milne. 9-5. 10-8 1-9, 9-1; R. Goodall lost to L. G. Holder, 9-10, 3-9. 9-6. 1-9; J. G. Foulds lost to M. D. Grant. 8-10. 9-7. 5-9, 2-9; R. A. Lathem beat W. Thom. 9-3, 9-7. 6-9. 0-9, 10-9. Christchurch B won by 9 games to 8. Christchurch A v. Collegiate.— R. G. Pattinson beat J. H. N. Pine. 3-9. 9-4. 9-7. 9-4: M. O Holdsworth lost to B. J, Shirlaw. 1-9, 3-9. 2-9; N. W. MeGillivrav beat J. A. Anderson, 9-4, 10-8. 9-0; P. R. Hadley lost to R. M. Garrett. 4-9, 3-9. 9-5. 9-6. 8-10. Christchurch A won by 3 games to 7.
