BULLDOZERS IN RIVER

Drivers’ Bid To Stop Flooding (From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE, April 17. Two bulldozer drivers braved raging seas and a flooded river on Monday night in a bid to cut a channel through the shingle bar at the Waihao river mouth and avert flooding of the surrounding coastal area. The drivers, Messrs V. Patrick and G. Todd, employed by the Waimate County Council, were prevented by the heavy sea from achieving success.

At one stage the sea engulfed one machine and its driver. Only an anchor rope to the other bulldozer and the efforts of 10 men prevented a drowning.

A reporter who visited the river mouth saw the machines and drivers so deep in water that only the drivers’ heads and shoulders and two pipes from the machines were visible. No further effort was made today but with the seas moderating a later attempt may have results.
