RIVERTON CUP
Desert Chief Works Well "The Press" Special Service DUNEDIN, April 17. Desert Chief worked with great zest when tie completed his preparation for the Riverton'Cup in a most impressive manner at Wingatui this morning. Ridden by his race rider, R. N. Marsh, Mr G. J Barton’s Ruthless five-year-old was three lengths clear of his stablemate and rival cup candidate, Carbonette (E. J. Didham) at the seven furlongs, but they were on terms running to the five Once they turned for home, Desert Chief dashed clear and was going away with an advantage of five lengths in tain 39 2-fcec, the last halfmile in 58sec and the concluding three furlongs in 44 2-ssec. It was a very seund gallop under the circumstances. The track was heavy and the work was held on the extreme outside of the course proper. Believe Me (R. J Skelton), which ran a promising race for fourth at Beaumont, and his stablemate. Golden Miller (B. E. Kennedy)..were not ridden out over the same ground in Imin 44sec after taking 57sec for the) opening half-mile The Timaru owner-trainer, C. Stewart, worked his cup candidate. Wind vale Lad and his hack sprinter Rural Life, before continuing his trip to Riverton. Neither was asked to do his best. Both will be ridden by W D. Skelton.
