FIRE BOARD ESTIMATES
Little Change This Year The Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board estimates it will need £143,320 for the current year, compared with £142,190 last year. These -figures were given to the board last evening by the Chief Fire Officer <Mr L. R. Osmond* and the secretary (Mr S. F. Marshall). Mr Marshall said that on the estimates, which still had to be approved by the New Zealand Fire Service Council, underwriters would pay £71.660 (£71.095 last year,, local authorities £57,328 (£56,876), and the Government £14,332 (£14,219). The total expenditure of the board was estimated at £175.128. compared with the actual spending of £169.442, and an estimate of £158,853. Salaries and wages of the permanent staff last year cost £90,635; this year they are estimated at £98,020. A big increase is shown in interest charges on loans. Last year this item cost £4250; this year it is estimated at £10,735. Mr Osmond said that no new vehicles had been bought in the last 18 months because of restrictions on the type that could be bought.
