Handicapped Children
Sir, —Having heard of the good work done by the Rudolf Steiner method abroad and in Hawke’s Bay for handicapped children. I should like to know more. Are cerebral palsied children accepted in the Hohepa Home? Knowing of the South Island’s need for such a home or homes in Canterbury and Otago should stimulate activity. We have no information publicly of how- many local children are in North Island homes for aid not obtainable here.—Yours, etc., LEEWAY. April 11, 1962. [Mrs C. E. van Asch, honorary secretary for the Canterbury committee of the NewZealand Trust Board for Home Schools for Curative Education said: “There is only one home so far in New Zealand where children in need of special care can receive curative education as applied in Rudolph Steiner Schools in England and Europe. Hohepa Home School, situated four miles from Napier on the Wharerangi Hills, accommodates 30 children. girls of all ages and boys up to 14 who then move to the farm school, controlled by the same trust board and management seven miles away. halfway between Napier and Hastings. No child is accepted in the homes without first being seen by th? principal or resident doctor who trained under Rudolph Steiner. Whether cerebral palsy children are accepted depends entirely on their degree of retardation. Only children who can reap the benefit of curative education are accepted. There are eight children from the South Island at Hohepa. If ‘Leeway’ would like to get in touch with me any further information will be supplied.”]
