Traffic Lights

Sir, —In view of the normal light flow of traffic at the intersection of Oxford terrace and Manchester street and the remote control from the adjacent lights at Armagh street there has appeared little merit in lights at this intersection. Today we have the absurd position that the Manchester street line of traffic eliminated through the closing of the road as a result of the rebuilding of the bridge but the lights are still operating. Should not the normal traffic rules as to giving away prevail and the lights be turned off? —Yours, etc., OBSERVER.

April 15, 1962. [The City Council Traffic Superintendent (Mr J. F.

Thomas) said that even with the elimination of the Manchester street through traffic the right and left hand turns at the intersection still had to be controlled. Dispensing with the use of the lights would not speed up traffic.]
