LEVY TO BE INCREASED

Board Facing Higher Costs (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN. April 16. Dairy factory directors present at the New Zealand Dairy Production and Marketing Board’s ward conferenct in Dunedin this morning were told that the levy paid by dairy companies to the board was to be increased. The deputy chairman of the board. Mr R. A. Candy, told the conference that the present levy of ,08d per lb of butter produced and 04d per lb of cheese was not sufficient this year. He said that the increase in the levy was to be .014 d on butter and 007 d on cheese This was expected to increase income by C 35.000 a year to meet new- expenses One of the mam items of increased expenditure was bursaries for factory employees who were taking the dairy factory course at Massey College The bursary would be basic pay rates minus £3 a week This was expected to cost £BOOO a year Another was the erection • of a dairy research building at Massey College Expansion of the research centre had necessitated this move which will cost about £lBO 000 The Government has agreed tn nay half of this. Third were the costs incurred in the tuberculosis eradication scheme. Payment would be made to farmers who experienced “undue hardships.” because of the eradication scheme.
