U.K. Soccer Results Burnley Loses, Ipswich Goes To Top

Burnley, seeking to emulate Tottenham Hotspur’s English Soccer Cup and League double, faltered badly when it was beaten. 3-1, at home by Manchester United in the First Division today. Defeat cost the club the lead in a fluctuating League battie to Ipswich Town, which scored a 1-0 win over Cardiff City. The position at the head of the table was: Ipswich, 50 points from 38 games; Burnley 49 from 36 games. Tottenham did not play today. Having reached the cup final by beating Fulham in last Monday's replay, Burnley was expected to beat Manchester United, but never recovered from a thirty-ninth minute goal by Manchester. The lead was increased with a penalty after the interval and though Burnley scored. United added the third two minutes from time. A goal in the twenty-fourth minute took Ipswich back to the top. but Cardiff’s defeat, and Chelsea’s 4-0 beating at West Bromwich, has given the bottom of the division a different look. Fulham, a few weeks ago almost certain to be relegated, continued its fighting rally with a 3-0 home win over Blackbum Rovers. The situation at the bottom of the table reads: Fulham, 28 points from 36 games; Cardin. 27 from 37 games: Chelsea, 25 from 38 games. Liverpool, runaway leaders in Division Two, had an idle dav. its match against Swansea being called off because of a smallpox epidemic in South Wales. The club’s nearest rivals. Leyton Orient, lost at home, 1-0, to Scunthorpe. Liverpool has 53 points from 36 games. Leyton 48 from 38 tames, and Sunderland 46 from 38 games. Portsmouth, though beaten.

2-0, at Coventry, holds a fivepoint lead in Division Three over Grimsby Town, while Millwall regained the lead in Division Four. There was no League football in Scotland or Ireland.
