NEW BRIGHTON P.B.C.

Coombes Anchor To K. Lucas The classic event of the New Brighton Power Boat Club’s racing calendar for A. B. and C Class inboards and outboards, the Coombes Anchor, was run at Pleasant Point on Saturday in perfect conditions. Nineteen boats started in the six-lap race and. although four craft were forced to withdraw, the race was still very thrilling. It was won by Tango (K. Lucas). In the outboard section Vulcan (G. White) led from the start. F. Williams the driver of Hustler was thrown 40ft clear of his boat when a part of his steering mechanism broke and the boat turned upside down at a speed in excess of 50 m.p.h. Williams escaped serious injury.

In the A Class handicap event Bel Air and Ace Hi thundered into the top corner seemingly locked together when suddenly Ace Hi (A. Idiens) veered off the course and headed for the mud flats. Afterwards Idiens said that he had holed a sponson due. it is thought, to water pressure whilst cornering at such speed and was making for shore before the boat sank. Results Coombes Anchor.—A. B.
