S.W. AFRICA MANDATE
Invitation To U.N, Group (N.Z -P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPETOWN, April 14. The chairman and vicechairman of the United Nations special committee on South-west Africa have been invited to South Africa for discussions on the mandated territory, the Prime Minister (Dr. Verwoerd) told Parliament yesterday.
Dr. Verwoerd said if reports that Mr Victorio Carpio, the chairman, and his deputy were willing to accept his Government’s invitation were correct “it can only be to the good of all and perhaps it will lead South Africa out of the present impasse." The United Nations committee of seven has been instructed to visit South West Africa by May 1 to prepare the way for ultimate independence. South Africa has never agreed that the mandate over the former German colony granted by the League of Nations after the first world war came under the United Nations as successor to the league.
