Julloch Selected At Nelson Today

(From Ou- Own Reporter) NELSON, April 15. The prospect of a heavy track at Richmond Park tomorrow has brought Julloch strongly into favour for the Redwood Memorial Handicap, the main race and first leg of the double, on the second day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s annual meeting.

Julloch showed that he was i mudlark of much ability w-hen he won both of the middle distance handicaps in heavy ground at Omoto last week-end. Even if the track was firm he would still have solid backing for he was the only one capable of putting the Nelson Cup winner. Valaris. to the test yesterday. Steady rain began tn Nelson on Saturday evening and it has been almost continuous. The track Showed that it had had a thorough soaking this morning so even if there is a break in the weather fast going would be out of the question. The going is unlikely to show Valaris to the best advantage but El Ganador and Teneriffe have both previously raced well on rain-affected tracks and on Nelson Cup showings could both get into the finish again. Persuasive is another whose form could sharpen now there is softer ground and the best of those closer to the minimum could be Night Sock. Tocsin and Gabelle may battle out open sprint honours in the Stoke Handicap, the second leg of the double.

Tocsin, like Julloch, was a dual winner in winter ground at Omoto. She will be ridden tomorrow by the stable apprentice. K. C. Thompson, who will be able to claim the full 71b allowance, bringing her weight down to 8-7, 21b less than she carried to an all the way win yesterday. The going is almost certain to retard some of the early speedsters tomorrow and that should be very much to the advantage of Gabelle, which runs her races out best when given time to get properly balanced. Riding engagements include:— W. D. Skelton: Valaris. Fair Polly, French Tray, Lucky View, Chief Order. D. N. Hadfield: Volterra. Tarlon, Obscure, Taxman. Red Jimmy or White Cloud. G. W.
