CAUSE OF EYE INJURIES

I nsafe Acts Bv orkers During the year ended January 31. 1962. investigations carried out into the causes of 111 eye injuries which occurred in the construction industry in New Zealand showed that four of the injuries arose from unsafe conditions and 43 of .them resulted from unsafe acts by workers, says a report from the Labour Department. In 58 of the eye injuries resulting from the use of mechanical plant, hand tools and arc welding plant, rt was shown than 36 of the workers injured were not wearing protective equipment at the t.me of the accident. ‘From the information obtained by the survey, it is obvious that many eye injuries could have been avoided had the workers taken simple precautions." the report says. “National statistics for 1960 show that of 2997 occupational eye injuries. 1577 were caused by flying particles from abrasive machinery and band tools combined. This is a frightful record when one considers that the wearing of safety spectacles would have ruled out many of the injuries,” the report says.
