MARATHON TRIAL

Good Time By C. F. Reece The best time for the marathon distance in New Zealand this year was recorded by the Canterbury distance runner. C. F. Reece, at Dunedin on Saturday morning when he ran the 26 miles 385 yards in 2 hours 23 minutes 10.2 seconds. In an official marathon trial the time was made against head winds and driving rain. Trained under the direction of the world famous coach, Mr A. Lydlard, Reece, a former Canterbury six-mile record holder, bettered by nearly three minutes the time recorded by the Olympic representative, B. Magee, in the New Zealand national marathon championships this year. The trial was run over the measured and surveyed course used for the New Zealand marathon championships in 1960. It started at 9 a.m. Reece ran the trial with the prominent Otago distance runner, A. Potts, and A. McGuire, of Canterbury. Potts was nearly two minutes behind Reece at 23 miles when he withdrew. McGuire withdrew after seven miles. In spite of worsening conditions Reece continued on strongly to the finish on the new all-weather track at the Caledonian grounds.
