Gullfax Wins First Leg At Whangarei

WHANGAREI. April 13. Gullfax and Advocacy—two Whangarei - owned horses battled out the finish of the McInnes Memorial Handicap, the main race and first leg of the off-course double, on the first day of the Whangarei Racing Club’s, autumn meeting today. Gullfax, a son of the former champion Northland galloper, Mt. Denby, outstayed Advocacy in the run up the straight to win by a length. Gullfax, the 1-3 favourite in an even betting race, is owned by Mr R. B. Tait, of Whangarei. Advocacy is owned by Mr D J. Thomson, a Whangarei solicitor, who is a member of tile club's judicial committee. There was an inquiry immediately after the race. Place money was paid out, but the win dividend was delayed. A protest was lodged by the trainer of Advocacy, T. J. Ingram, of Henderson.
Mr Thomson took no part in the inquiry. The protest was dismissed. The Gullfax—Mali double paid £l6 17s 6d for £l.
The meeting was held in fine weather, but the track was easy. The totalisator on-course handled £43,756 10s, including £7694 on doubles, compared with £36,621 on the first dav last year. Results:—
