FISHING FOR SALMON
“New Era” For
Anglers
After 37 years of disastrous policy a new era had begun for salmon fishing: the future policy of the Marine Department would be in the interests of angling only, Mr D J. Hughey said at a meeting of the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society. Mr Hughey reported to the council the outcome of a deputation to the Minister of Marine (Mr Gerard) on the society’s representations to make salmon a sporting fish only. ‘ He said the Minister had agreed to revoke the regulations covering the issue of licences to net river mouths, salmon trawler licences, and salmon anglers’ sale licences “The Minister said he was concerned about the salvage of salmon at Highbank. and thought he would like to retain some regulations under which the South Island Salmon Committee could apply for a licence to sell salmon taken from the tailrace." said Mr Hughey.'
