CONCERN AT TRUANCY

Headmaster Urges New Approach

The creation of a post to deal directly with truancy was suggested by the headmaster of the Burnside High School (Mr C. C. Cross). Mr Cross said at a meeting of the school’s board of governors that he was concerned by the behaviour,of two boys One had been absent all this year, and the other was frequently away. “If ordinary, law-abiding citizens send their children to school, it seems to me that an effective means should be devised to deal with incompetent parents," he said. An officer should be appointed under the chief inspector of primary schools to deal with truancy, he said Although means were open for dealing with truancy, they were slow, complicated, and insufficient.
