DEVELOPING THE COAST

<N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. April 13.

"Real disaster” could overtake the West Coast of the South Island unless it could develop more acres a year than it does at present, and the district considered itself in duty bound to bring what pressure it could to make the Government realise that it alone could supply the answer, the annual conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce was told at New Plymouth today. When making approaches to Wellington, time and time again they had come up against the question. "What are you doing for yourselves?" "But,” said Mr R. J Truman. Greymouth, “what can we do?” Speaking on behalf of the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce. Mr Truman asked that the conference endorse the remit that "in view of the decline of the mining industry and the restrictions on timber throughout the West Coast area, with the consequent adverse effect on the economic development of the area and on the national product of New Zealand as a whole, the Government be urged to give consideration to further concurrent development projects such as tourism and land development.”

The motion was unanimously approved. • j
