Pleasant Point Trees

Sir,—According to a report in your Monday issue, some people were unable to see the entire course because of intervening trees. The Christchurch Drainage Board will now be requested to remove part, at least, of these trees I hope this request will be peremptorilly turned down. These trees were not originally planted just there for nothing. Why should a valuable protective bank of trees be destroyed even in part because a small section of the community cannot see the entire course of a mere boat race? Who could possibly say that these banks of trees will not be urgently necessary

at some future time to protect land? We all know the consequences of removing Sumner's sand-hills—nature’s effective barrier against flood tides. One wonders what the cost to the ratepayer has been of that rash act. Why not modify the course for "some future occasion?—Yours, etc, CLOANTHUS. March 21, 1962.
