CRICKET Late Stand Saves B.H.S. From Low Score
A minted stand by the’ lower order batsmen K. J. Samson and G. G. Cross, brought the Boys’ High School total to one of reasonable proportions, after the early batsmen had coilapsed in the annual cricket match against Christ’s College yesterday. Conditions were unpleasant for toe match Which was played at the school grounds, but there could be no excuse for the poor display given by toe recognised batsmen. The College attack was accurate but certainly not hostile on an easy-paced wicket. M. G Lester turned the ball only occasionally, but kept the ball well up to the batsmen, and indiscriminate shots got the batsmen out.
The best bowling performance came from the pace man B. Andrews, who bowled unchanged in a marathon effort of 25 overs. Andrews ran the ball away from the righthanders. but managed to bring the occasional ball back off the wicket. Several times be beat the edge, and at no stage did the batsmen take toe initiative. Probably, be could have dispensed wito his third slip, in favour of a silly mid-off for the occasional ball that popped. Significantly, only when Andrews and Lester were rested, did toe High School batsmen adopt an aggressive attitude.
C. L. Bull and W. Burtt appeared to be quite at ease with toe bowling, but Bull lost his wicket while attempting to cut the left-band spinner, Lester. Burtt was bowled in attempting to force a ball on toe on-side. In a short space of time toe School total had wilted considerably. and toe bowlers were well on top at this stage. But towards the end of toe day, Samson came to light with some powerful
square cuts and pull shots and toe three figures came up for toe loss of seven wickets. Scores were:— BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL First Innings C. L. Bull, c Garrett, b Lester ..13 K. Hill, b Andrews .. 2 W.
