Kaiapoi Telephones

Sir, —ls it true that the residents of Kaiapoi were given the opportunity to be connected with the Christchurch telephone exchange and did not accept? To me this seems unbelieveable. I think the Kaiapoi subscribers should be given an opportunity to express their views on the subject before definite steps are taken.—Yours, etc., TELEPHONE. March 5, 1962.

[The regional engineer of the Post Office, Christchurch (Mr L. D. Bewley) said: “The Post Office is carefully considering this question but has not yet made an offer to Kaiapoi subscribers for direct service on the Christchurch exchange on a flat rate rental basis. There are major technical difficulties, including the lack of sufficient junction circuits between the two exchanges, which would preclude the establishment of this type of service until some time after automatisation in July. Relief of the junction route involves several major engineering works. The Post Office will advise Kaiapoi residents when it is able to make a definite offer.”]
