SHIPPING INDUSTRY
“Difficult Period” (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. March 7. The shipping industry was passing through a very difficult period, Mr N. D. Pixley, chairman of P, and 0.-Orient Lines of Australia, stated on his arrival in the liner Oriana in Auckland today. He said there had been a substantial increase in all running costs and in operating costs ashore and afloat except for the purchase of fuel oil. Asked whether competition from airlines was affecting the industry, he replied: “We are carrying more people than ever—particularly in the Suez area." Mr Pixley said the 45.000ton linen Canberra was over her teething troubles and was now running well. He added that P. and O. had no plan® for any further ships at present as it had a big tanker programme nearing completion.
However, the trend was to build ships in the 40.000-ton rather than in the 20.000-ton bracket. Three 22,000-ton-ners, the Strathnaver, Strathaird and Orontes, had recently been sent to the breakers.
