UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Alterations To Cive Three Floors The interior of the original library at the Undvensity of Canterbury, opened in 1916, has been altered to provide three floors which will accommodate 70,000 volumes The original basement floor has been renovated, and steel supports have been used to strengthen the main floor so that it can support a floor which has been built above it. The steel snipports have slots in them which carry the sheet-steel bookshelves. Most of the work has been finished, but some painting remains to be done on the top floor. Books are being Shifted into the lower floors. Books on history and New Zealand history, and political science will be on the upper floor, the English collection will be on the middle floor, and books on law, economics, and accountancy wilt be on the lower floor. The art books will be replaced in the hallway of the old School of Art building, and reference books and Bibliographies will be shelved in the history and political science room, which adjoins the present entrance hall. The door at the eastern end of the original library was, until 1958, the main entrance to the library, but has since been a freight entrance to the staff workroom. It is now closed except as an emergency exit.
