CONFERENCE AT YALE
Invitation To N.Z. Scientists The director of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr T. A. Rafter) is one of three scientists from outside the United States invited to address a conference on the biogeochemistry of sulphur isotopes to be held next month at Yale University. Two other New Zealanders now in the United States, both of whom have worked at the institute, will also attend the conference. They are Mr J. Hulston, of Christchurch, a member of the institute staff now studying at McMaster University, and Dr L Kaplan, of Wellington, a former member of the staff now working at the California Institute of Technology. The conference has been called to discuss the standardisation of methods of mass spectrometer measurement, and the significance of results of sulphur isotope work in the fields of biology, geology, and chemistry. Mr Rafter will give the conference an outline of the institute’s work on sulphur isotopes. The main theme of this work has been the origin of sulphur in geothermal and volcanic areas of New Zealand and volcanic regions of the Pacific. The institute has also been associated with a considerable amount of isotope work on the origin of the sulphide minerals of Australia. The conference will be held from April 12 to 14. Mr Rafter will leave New Zealand on April 7, and while overseas he win visit nuclear research establishments in Los Angeles and New York.
