SCHOOL FIRE PROTECTION
Council Advice “Ignored” ( N.Z. Press Association) WESTPORT, March 7. The Education Department and the Ministry of Works had ignored the advice of the Fire Service Council regarding fire protection in schools, said the Chief Fire Service Officer (Mr T. A. Varley) at the annual United Fire Brigades' Association conference in Westport today. Mr Varley said the situation required serious attention. The department and Ministry had their own ideas on the subject, and had ignored the advice of the council.
He had completed a 16-page report for headmasters and their staffs, but the department had said it was too lengthy and must be shorter. Chief Fire Officers should endeavour to co-operate with schools in their district, said Mr Varley. Particular attention must be paid to the older schools which were numerous throughout the country. The association should bring pressure to bear on those responsible to see that adequate fire protection and proper fire escapes were maintained.
