MAN “DIED” 36 TIMES
Heart Surgery Succeeds
IN.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 7. A patient “died” 36 times during a complicated heart operation at Melbourne’s Alfred Hospital last nightDoctors said today that the patient, Ernest Jacobsen, aged 87. was in a satisfactory condition at the hospital thanks to a “pacemaker” machine which controls his heart. The doctors said Mr Jacobsen had an occlusion. His heart stopped beating 36 times for up to 30 seconds each time during the operation, which involved passing an electrode through the heart wall to stimulate the heart and regulate its control. Mr Jacobsen still has the electrode attached to his heart and to the “pacemaker.” It was the first time the ' operation had been carried out in Victoria.
