Economic Links Urged NEW YORK, March 6. The United Nations Secre-tary-General (U Thant) has urged the Asian countries to forge closer economic ties. While stepping up their use of modern planning methods, in a message to the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East, which will open its session in Tokyo today. In his message, made public last night, he referred to the sweeping changes that had taken place in Asia during the last two decades. “These changes,” he said, “have established the prerequisites for a concentrated offensive against the old scourges of poverty and stagnation. “The task is great but the burden it imposes on us must be weighed against the goal of giving the people of Asia the opportunity of leading fuller and happier Uvea,’’ he said.
Recognition of the need for co-operation and concerted action was the keystone of the commission’s work. U Thant said.
