Ewes Meet Sound Sale At Oxford

Most classes of ewes sold soundly at about late rates when the annual ewe fair was held at Oxford yesterday. In spite of prolonged drought conditions in the district during the spring and summer the sheep came forward in surprisingly good condition. Top two-tooth ewes sold strongly with the pick of the Romneys selling to 86s. which was only 2s short of the top figure paid at Little River last week. Fine wool young ewes reached to 665. Older ewes met a steady sale at about recent price levels.

A good inch of rain in the district on Sunday helped the market, giving buyers more confidence with the winter feed position now more assured.

The sale attracted an offer-; ing of 15.536 head compared with 11.999 last year and included 2894 ewe and wether lambs '684 last year), 5018 I two-tooth ewes <4244>. 7390 older ewes <6765) and 234 wethers (306). I The two-tooth ewes were mainly in fairly good condition with a sprinkling of well-bred and well-grown top sheep. The sale began on a subdued note with values at fairly modest levels, but it tended to firm as it went along and ended quite Strongly. The top sheep met a sound inquiry at prices comparable with recent best fair rates. A pen of 77 Romneys from J. U. McCracken 'Haylands) sold for 86s and another two of his pens realised' 71s and C. C. Anderson (View Hill) also received 78s for 72 Romneys. Last year Mr McCracken received up to £5 2s. A feature of his entry of 400 young ewes this year was the complete absence of any brand or mark on them at all, a factor that certainly added to their attractiveness. Fine wool young ewes at the same time realised up to 665. In the opinion of some observers the average class of fine wool two-tooth showed a slight improvement on the fine wool fair at Culverden last week and were easier selling. Two-tooth Values Toe best of the Romney twotooths brought from 60s to 86s. with good at Ms to 58s. average at 42s to 48s and others at 30s to 40s. The pick of the fine ■wools of this age group sold from 60s to 665. good from 52s to 575, average at 40s to 475. and others at 32s to 375. Compared with last year’s sale the decline in values was similar to that recorded at other recent fairs. Over 15 pens of sheep sold yesterday the average price was back by 20s on sheep from the same vendors at last year's sale. For four and five-year-old ewes the level of values was very similar to late fair rates and over a selection of pens from the same vendors offered both this year and last year four-year-old ewes showed a depreciation of 19s or. last year and five-year-olds were back by 17s. The best of the four-year-old fine wools realised from 36s to 42s with good at 30s to 355. and average at 23s to 295. Romneys of the same age ranged to 40s for the best with average to good at up to 30s.
