MISSIONARY’S BIBLE

Presentation To Aldred Chureh A Bible which once belonged to the family of the first Wesleyan missionary in the Christchurch district, the Rev. John Aldred. has been given to the Aldred Memorial Methodist Church, Mairehau. The chureh. which was opened in 1956. was named in memory of the missionary after the disappearance of the name Aldred street from the city during a general street name change. The Bible was given to the Aldred church by the trustees of the Northcote Methodist Church. Auckland. It had been sent to them by the home mission department of the Methodist Church, which had received it from an unknown source. The Northcote minister (the Rev B Sides) noticed the name John Aldred in the family list in the Bible, and suggested that it would probably be greatly appreciated by the Aldred Church trustees. The Bible has been rebound and will be used as the pulpit Bible at the Aidred church. To judge by the names given in the Bible, it was once almost certainly the personal property of the missionary. The list gives the names of the family of Joseph and Anne Lawry, and the names of the family which resulted from the marriage of the Lawrys’ youngest daughter. Mary, with the Rev. John Aldred in 1849 The Bible was printed, in Cambridge in 1847 by John W. Parker for the British and Foreign Bible Society.
