FERRY SHIP DAMAGED
Four Portholes Covered Up (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. The inter-island ferry steamer Maori showed evidence of yesterday’s collision at Lyttelton with the coaster Motu when she arrived at Wellington today. There were deep score marks along 70 feet of her bull, nearly 40 frames were bent, plating was buckled, and portholes damaged. The accident occurred when the Maori was berthing at Lyttelton and was caught by a sudden south-westerly gust of wind. Four portholes were so badly damaged that circular plates were welded into the hull in their places so that the ship could make the return passage. The damage was inspected this morning by surveyors and shore staff from the Union Company. It will not interfere with the vessel’s regular running and will probably be repaired when she withdraws for annual survey later this year.
