£971 From Street
Appeal
The Canterbury and West Coast Tuberculosis Association’s street appeal in December realised £971, it was reported at the monthly meeting of the association’s executive. This sum included a gift of £124 from the Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson Freezing Workers and Related Trades Union. The chairman (Mr C. A. Rattray), who presided, expressed appreciation of the public’s generosity to the association. It was decided to apply to the City Council for a permit for the annual street appeal to be held this year in November. Twenty-four applications for relief of various kinds were dealt with at the meeting, and the secretary reported that in addition to gifts to patients in the Sanatorium at Christmas, 79 parcels of groceries were distributed among the families of former patients of the Sanatorium. The statement of accounts showed that for the 10 months from March 1 to November 30, 1961, £9ll had been spent on patients’ aid and £59 had been given to the Sanatorium Service Committee, members of which visit patients in the Sanatorium regularly. Mrs J. J. Foster, who has resigned from the position of secretary to the committee, was thanked for her valuable work during many years. The executive had been advised that a legacy of £250 had been bequeathed to the association by the late Mr L. J. Taylor. Regret at the departure from Christchurch of the Rev. O. R. Bambury and the Rev. G. D. Falloon was expressed at the meeting. Mr Bambury, who has transfrred to Te Awamutu, was a member of the executive for some years and he and Mr Falloon, who has gone to Timaru, were thanked for their interest in patients at the Sanatorium. Dr. J. W. Crofton Details of the visit of the eminent authority on tuberculosis, Dr. J. W. Crofton, were received at the meeting. Dr. Crofton, who is the son of a doctor, and was born in 1912, has been professor of tuberculosis at the University of Edinburgh since 1952. During the war he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He has been senior lecturer in medicine in London, and was attached to the tuberculosis unit of the Medical Research Council, London. He is coming to New Zealand at the invitation of the Wellington Tuberculosis Association. Professor Crofton will arrive in Auckland on March 19. and from March 25 to April 6 will conduct a course for tuberculosis officers in Wellington. He will then pay a short visit to Invercargill and will arrive in Dunedin to spend a few days before leaving on April 11 for the Hermitage. The next day he will arrive in Christchurch and will be the guest of Dr. J. A. McLeod. Cashmere Sanatorium. On the morning of April 13 he will address medical men on clinocopathology, and will leave the city that evening.
