Finger Lost At Work (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 28. Damages of £4812 18s were awarded by a Supreme Court jury yesterday to a former butcher and part-time saxophonist in a claim based on the amputation of one of his fingers. He was Hugh Gillies Gray Reed, of Christchurch,

The claim was defended by C. D. Varnham, Ltd., butchers, of Wellington. Dr. O. C. Miazengarb, Q.C., with him Mr L G. Rose, appeared for Reed, and Mr R. G. Collins for the company. Reed claimed damages of £7062 16s 4d, comprising £5OOO general damages and £2062 16s 4d special damages. He was awarded general damages of £3375 and special damages of £1437 18s. Reed, in evidence, said that from playing the saxophone he “had quite a bit to come and go on."

Now he could not play, in spite of hundreds of hours of practice. He could not work as a butcher and also found it difficult with other jobs.
