South African Cricket
Sir,—The inclusion of Basil d’Oliviera in the Commonwealth team to tour New Zealand next month is a reminder of what New Zeeland cricketers have miraed by playing only the white teams of the South African Cricket Association and agreeing to ignore the multiracial teams of the South African Cricket Board of Control. d’Oliviera has an enviable reputation as a cricketer both as captain of representative teams under the South African Cricket Board of Control and in Lancashire League. It must also have been a blow to the 20.000 players of the multiracial organisation who naturally would like overseas competition. The success of such non-white players as d’Oliviera and Abrahams is a reminder that the exclusively white South African Cricket Association cannot justly claim to represent South African cricket; nor can matches with its teams honestly be considered worthy of test status.—Yours, etc., RICHARD THOMPSON.
