SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

u In Australia (N.Z. Press Assn.—CopvrigM) SYDNEY, February 14. Australia was becoming a land of “cadgers” in obtaining finance for scientific research, Professor W. N. Christiansen, of the electrical engineering branch of Sydney University, said today. He blamed the Federal policy in allotting money to universities. Professor Christiansen arrived yesterday in the liner Iberia from Holland, where he led a team of scientists in helping to build a large radio-telescope. He said Australia had been forced to “cadge” money from European and the United States Governments to help pay for scientific research programmes liecause little or no funds were available. The Federal Government at present gave only small grants to universities to share. “As a result, our institutions are notoriously bankrupt,” he said. Professor Christiansen said the Australian Government should establish a national finance foundation.
