DAYTONA CAR RACE
Big Win For S. Moss
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) DAYTONA BEACH (Florida), February 13.
S. Moss, driving a Ferrari Berlinetta, won the grand touring class in the Daytona Continental three-hour race.
D. Gurney (United States), driving a Lotus 19. won the sports car classification.
Moss took first honours in the grand touring class in spite of oil splattering his windshield. He was fourth in over-all placing. He told reporters: “I couldn’t see a thing most of the way.” Moss got into a tight spot only once, however, when J. Weatherly spun in front of him in a Lister-Corvette sports car and dented, one of Moss’s mudguards. Gurney and Moss each won 7500 dollars.
Gurney finished the race on his self-starter. He roared into the home straight just before 5 p.m. when the checkered flag was due to fall ending the race. He braked to a stop 10 feet from the finishing line. If he had crossed it before the flag fell, he would have had to make another lap and lose the race.
He waited out two minutes of his four-minute lead. Then, when the flag fell, he pushed the I«otus across with his starter.
At one point late in the race Gurney had an eightmile lead. He then began to ease off for a coasting victory.
An estimated 14.000 people, including the astronauts. Alan B. Shepard and Donald K. Slayton, watched the race, which was run in a cold, 20-mile-an-hour wind but under sunny skies.
