Table Tennis WALLABIES IN LEAD

Easy Win Over Eagles Wallabies I had no difficulty in maintaining its unbeaten record against the bottom team. Eagles, when the Canterbury Table Tennis Association’s summer A grade competition was continued this week. Other winning teams were Wallabies 11. in second position, University I and University 11. R. G. Hart and K. J. Cassidy each recorded three singles victories for Wallabies I. Although they were taken to three games on occasions. neither player was at any stage in danger of defeat. R. Sanderson and P. Ives gave further encouraging performances, and all the doubles were hard-fought. D. McLean, who has played little table tennis in the last two seasons, scored an upset win over M. A. Cox when South Brighton met Wallabies 11. McLean was in good touch with his attacking play. Mrs J. Prisk won her ■ three singles without the loss of a game for Wallabies 11. and K. F. Stevenson also won his three singles matches. G. W. Makinson, the leading scorer in the competition, maintained his position with three victories for Star against University 11. M. J. Coppen, the provincial junior champion, played well to take the second game from Maginson in their match, but could make little impression in the third. R. F. Inns, who has one of the best spin services in the competition, won the only singles match for Dallington in its 3-9 loss to University I. Inns beat J. A. Dowie. For University, J. O. Moen continued his good form of recent weeks with three convincing singles victories. Next week’s match between the two Wallabies teams could well decide the fate of the competition. At their Last meeting, Wallabies I won 7-5. These teams were also winner and runner-up last season.
