£250 AWARD FOR LIBEL

Councillor At Henderson (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Feb. 12. A Henderson Borough Councillor, Mr A. K. Corban, was today awarded £250 for libel. He had claimed £5OO in the Magistrate’s Court against the Waitakere Gazette. Ltd., (Mr M. Shanahan) for remarks about him which were published in the “Gazette" on June 13 last year. The remarks were in a letter relating to parking in the Henderson borough. Mr Corban claimed they imputed he was lacking in integrity as a councillor and deputy-mayor. In a written decision, Mr H. Jenner Wily, S.M., said the defence failed to show the offending passage was fair comment. Mr Corban later announced he would give the money, after deducting costs, to the Henderson Anglican Church’s new church building fund.
