Ewe Values Down On Last Year

Compared with last *“f, 8 fw ' values declined sharply at the KaAeura ewe fair yesterday. Average to food to better class ewes were cheaper by 10s to 15s a head on rates ruling a J e * r ago, and four and nve-ye>r-old ewes were selling practically at levels ruling two years Mo. However. prices were in line with recent Addington rates and in fact in the case of the younger ewes these met a relatively good sale and could be quoted in advance of late Addington rates talcing freight rates from Kaikoura into account Four and five-year ewes however, were only making current market rates The sale attracted a very much larger offering than last year. The entry totalled 11.309 compared with 4924 last year and included 3025 two-tooth ewes. 5623 older ewes. 2565 lambs and 96 wethers. There were more than twice as many ewes forward as last year and more than three tunes as many lambs. Two-tooths The two-tooth ewe entry included a good representation of younger ewes, although there was some feeling that the very wet conditions experienced in the district last winter had left its mark on these sheep With the main weight of these young ewes selling between the 50s to 60s mark values were up to 10s back on last year's sale and over a selection of 13 pens of two-tooths sold yesterday values were about 15s below rates for comparable sheep from the same vendors offered at last year's fair. Nevertheless at fully up to current market rates, and even slightly better, there was a steady demand and a good clearance of these ewes The pick of the selection ranged from 58s to 66s with one outstanding sale of Romneys from B C. Wright (Wenlock) being made at 70s for a pen of 120. This was only 5s below last year’s top price. The same vendor also secured the second best price with another pen of 122 at 66s C A. McGregor • Greenhills) also sold 74 at 63s and 148 at 625, and sales at 60s were made by H. C ActonAdams (Mahunga) with 68, R. A Howard (Glenburn) with 70 and A. W. Wilson (Glen Tui) with 163. Older Ewes The better class of four-year-old ewes also looked to be about 15s cheaper than last year with the top selection of sheep yesterday making from about 30s to 335, compared with 48s to 58s a year ago Quality among the older class of ewe was not. however, notable and was no more than average. For the lesser quality four-year-olds the margin with last year’s sale was not. however, so great The average to good class of ewe was about 5s to 10s easier than last year. A notable sale in this age group was made by C. A. McGregor (Greenhills) with 241 Romneys fetching 455. Next best price was 33s for 80 from D W. Lee (Mount Ludd) and then came three sales at 31s made by L. P. Blunt (Steepdown) for 75. F Barratt Clinton) for 70 and R. G. Barratt iPuhi Puhi) for 83.

A small selection of four-year-old ewes sold yesterday showed a drop of 15s on sheep from the same vendors offered a year ago straight five-year-old ewes sold from 25s to 30s for the best, compared with 35s to 40s last year, and the average class ranged from 20s to 255. compared with 30s to 34s at the last fair.

R F. G. Latter (Kincaid Downs) made one of the leading sales in this age group with 90 at 30s. and M. T. Evans (Inland Road) had 120 at 28s. Four and five-year-old ewes, of which there was a fairly sizeable selection, ranged to 31s for the best, with the main weight making from about 23s to 26s One of the best sales here was made on account of the estate C. J. Aitken (Swyncombe) at 31s. A pen of unsoecified age from R. G Barratt (Puhi Puhi) fetched about 32s Ewe Lamb* The considerable offering of lambs included a useful selection of Romney ewe lambs, which made from 32s to 38s 6d in the wool, with a shorn line making 235. The top ewe lamb sale was made by H C. ActonAdams (Mahunga) with 105 at 38s 6d. M. J. Harnett and Sons • Kaikoura) also sold 129 at 37s 6d Buying interest was widespread. with sheep being purchased for destinations from Ashburton to Havelock. Seddon and Ward and Banks Peninsula and the West Coast Intermediate centres for which sheep v ere bought included Rangiora. Kaizpoi.
