PROTECTION OF INDUSTRY
New Provision In Australia (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CANBERRA, Feb. 12. The Australian Tariff Board is to be asked to consider giving advance assurances of tariff protection to new industries before they begin production in Australia. This proposal to encourage establishment of new industries was disclosed last night by the Minister for Trade (Mr John McEwen). At present the general rule is that industries have to be established in production in Australia before they can apply to the board for protection against import competition. Mr McEwen was amplifying the Federal Government's announcement last week of j new measures to stimulate' the economy. He said that industry organisations had asked the Government to afford protection to industries for proposed extensions into new; manufacturing, and to industries proposing to set up manufacture in Australia fori the first time.
