DEATH OF DRIVER

J. Mansel, Of Auckland (N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, Feb. 12. After spending nine days in the Dunedin Hospital on the dangerously ill list, the Auckland racing car driver, John Mansel, aged 33, died of his injuries soon after 5.30 p.m. today. Mansel was rushed to hospital after his spectacular smash in the Dunedin Festival Championship road race on Saturday, February 3. He suffered serious multiple injuries which included a broken leg, head and facial abrasions, and chest injuries. He also suffered severe shock.

Mansel’s Cooper Maserati racing car mounted a kerb on the southern Cemetery hill and crashed sideways into a power pole. The impact broke the car in two He was thrown bodily from his vehicle on to the roadway. His car was wrecked. Mansel had been described as “One of the younger New Zealand drivers on the way up at present” by the magazine, “New Zealand Grand Prix.” In 1960 he scored a fine win at Waimate.
