AGREEMENT ON ALCAN
Discussion At Meeting ( N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 12. The Alcan agreement negotiated between the former Labour Minister of Finance (Mr Nordmeyer) and Alcan Industries in 1959 was discussed at a meeting in the office of the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) tonight. The meeting was attended by members of the Cabinet Economic Committee and departmental officials. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and Mr Marshall earlier today declined to comment on newspaper reports that Industries and Commerce Department officials knew nothing of the Alcan agreement till they read newspaper reports that Mr Nordmeyer concluded it during his visit to the Commonwealth Finance Ministers’ Conference in Canada. Mr Marshall is expected to issue a statement soon setting out details of the agreement and the contents of the letter from Mr Nordmeyer to Alcan Industries in which he is reported to have assured Alcan of overseas exchange and import licences for aluminium ingots for their Wiri factory. It is being argued in some quarters that this would prevent the Consolidated Zinc Company from selling the products of its Southland aluminium plant in New Zealand.
