37 YEARS WITH RAILWAYS
Retirement Of Mr S. V. Jennings
Almost 37 years of continuous employment with the New Zealand Railways ended on Friday afternoon for Mr S. V. Jennings, traffic subforeman at the Christchurch goods sheds. To mark the occasion, a presentation was made on behalf of his workmates bv the goods manager (Mr H M. P Baker).
During his long service. Mr Jennings only worked in two branches of the railway service's many departments He spent six years in the works and ways branch as a casual surfaceman at Blackball and 31 years in the traffic branch.
Mr Jennings made several moves about the South Island before being transferred to Christchurch. After his spell at Blackball he was transferred as tablet porter to Goodwood in 1933. Five years later he filled a similar post at Brunner. His first visit to Christchurch was as a porter in the goods sheds in 1938. Five years later he was transferred to Balclutha, and promoted storeman when he again returned to Christchurch in 1944 He remained in this position until his appointment in 1955 as traffic sub-foreman, the job from which he retired on Friday.
