N.Z. TRAINING SQUAD

Miss Nicholson Included Miss S. A. Nicholson, recovering from an operation for appendicitis, was present al Naenae Olympic Pool on Saturday night to hear her name announced as a member of the training squad for New Zealand’s Empire Games swimming nominees. It was a happy moment for the girl whose title-winning ambitions were abruptly ended by illness on the first day of the championships. The squad announced consisted of 20 swimmers, some of whom are regarded as future Games prospects and who will attend the training school for the first three weeks only. The convenor of the national selection panel (Mr A. J. Donaldson. of Christchurch) did not name the swimmers who fell within this category, but said this would be resolved on April 7, when the swimming nomination for the Empire Games are made. The swimmers selected were: Men: B. Clarke (Auckland). B. Crowder (Wellington). T C. Dalton (Auckland), D. F. Gerrard (Auckland). H. W. Graham (Waikato). P. M. Hatch (Wellington). G. Monteith (Manawatu). J. Palmer (Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay). A. B. Robertson (Auckland), G. Ruzio-Saban (Auckland), A. H. Seagar (Auckland) and R. Walker (Wellington). Women: Misses G. Dennis (Waikato). V. Haddon (Manawatu). M. Macrae (Auckland), A. McMillan (Waikato). L. Moore (Wellington), S. A. Nicholson (Canterbury). Mrs H. Rogers (Waikato). Miss S Woonton (Auckland). The most notable omission was that of K. Stevens (Manawatu). joint-holder of the New Zealand men’s 110 yards butterfly record, who is to take part in the Australian championships at Melbourne in a few days. Questioned on this point Mr Donaldson said Stevens was not vet up to standard for the 220 yards event—which was the Empire Games distance—but emphasised that the squad could be Increased in the event of outstanding times being produced by swimmers other than the 20 named.
