WORKED AT HARVARD

U.S. Woman In City Nursing training was helpful as a background when Mrs Ruth Neff, formerly of Chicago and newly-arrived in Christchurch, became a research assistant in the Harvard Biological Laboratory. Mrs Neff worked as a laboratory assistant in protein chemistry, where scientists were analysing amino acids and protein compounds. Her job entailed working with different laboratory machinery on experiments, and on the different means of carrying out experiments in this field. Before her marriage, Mrs Neff took a nursing degree programme, graduating with a bachelor of science in nursing and with the registered nurses’ certificate from the University of Minnesota. Biology and chemistry training during her nursing course helped her with her laboratory job, but, she said yesterday, she learnt the new Work mostly by picking up methods in the laboratory. Mrs Neff arrived in Nev.’ Zealand last week with her husband, a physicist who will lecture at the University of Canterbury. Mr Neff took his degree at Harvard University, and will complete his thesis this year. Married for two years, Mr and Mrs Neff are both sports enthusiasts—ski-ing and camping included—and hope to indulge their interest in New Zealand. Another hobby they share, which they also hope to take up in New Zealand, is folk and national dancing.

Fluoridation

Fluoridation is expected to begin in about two months at the Branxholme headworks of Invercargill's water supply. Long regarded by the Health Department as an urgent need here, the treatment has been awaited for more than four years. It will begin on completion of the headworks building, which will be mainly automatic in operation. The modern pumphouse is at an advanced stage of construction.—(P.A.)
