Obituary MISS C. A. BOURN

Miss C. A. Bourn died recently. She was born at Homebrook, where her father, Mr Charles Bourn, was farming. She joined the Civil Service about 1912 as matron of the Government Receiving Home, where children were committed to the care of the State. The home was then on Fitzgerald avenue and afterwards moved to a house on Ferry road. Later Miss Bourn was transferred to the Boy’s Probation Home on Stanmore road as matron.

When a home was opened in Timaru for wayward girls she was appointed its first matron. She also served periods at Government homes in Auckland and later in Wellington. Miss Bourn was a woman of wide experience and understanding and many charities made their appeal to her generosity. She contributed regularly to the Cathedral Restoration Fund. After her retirement in 1932 she lived at St. Elmo Courts, then used as residential flats. Later she went to live with an old friend at Avonside. Miss Bourn is survived by one sister, Mrs P. Revell, and a brother who. after the Boer War. returned to Africa to live.

For some years ,Miss Bourn had suffered from lameness which greatly curtailed her activities; She was a good needlewoman and also read a great deal.
