BOWLS Open Pairs Play Continues

Conditions were almost perfect on Saturday for the second day of the Christchurch Bowling Centre's open pairs tournament. It was unfortunate that the Lanwood greens were used, as ;they are not good enough | for such a tournament. The field was whittled ; down during the day and | when the last game ended ithere was only one two-lifer 'and eight one-lifers left. Those remaining are.—Two[lifer: E. N. Bromley (Christchurch). One-lifers: W.

Cogswell (St. Albans), G Craig (Canterbury), R A. Croft (Amberley). S J Snedden (Linwood), G. Young (Shirley). F. B. Hirkman (Sydenham). C H. Sinclair (United). T. W. Dixon (South Brighton). 'Die final rounds iof this tournament will be decided on the Christchurch I green next Saturday. ! Snedden struggled to retain his two lives in the first game of the day and only ; managed to win by one against I. Anticich (New Brighton). Anticich played ian almost perfect shot with his last bowl to trail the kitty for the game, but he failed ,to gain the decision, going down 21-20. Snedden had to fight back in the next game against Croft. The Linwood pair held the lead. 10-7. on the ninth head, then dropped ja five to Amberley. [ Led on Sixteenth I Once in front Amberley was determined to stay there and led, 16-14, on the sixteenth head. Losing a three to Linwood on the next put

Amberley one down, but this was recovered on the next This was the last effort for over the next three heads Linwood scored four to win, 21-17. Snedden save' his first life go when in the next game he was completely outplayed by Cogswell and lost, 18-11. He retained his last life when, with three threes, a four an<j five singles, he beat H. Nicholls, 18-5. after 13 heads. Cogswell was little troubled in his first game when he beat Miles (Spreydon) after the ninth head. Miles led 7-3 on the seventh head, then a three and a I single to Cogswell evened [the game. 7-7. From then on Cogswell held the front, even after dropping a five on the fifteenth head, to win. 20-15. Cogswell then met H. Dcavoll (Syderliam), who had an easy win over Cra'g in his first game. The St. Albans pair were too steady for the Sydenham combination and were 6-1 up on the sixth head. Sydenham recovered over the next four heads to even the score. 7-7. then St. Albans went away again to lead, 14-10, on the eighteenth. A

four on the next head to Sydenham brought Mie pair right back into the game with the score 14-14 and only two heads left to play. St. Albans made sure of victory with a two and a four on these heads to win. 20-14. Hie strain over the closing heads of this game must have told on the St. Albans pair for in the last game of the day they were trounced by Bromley, 21-3, after 14 heads.
